When FDNY T-Shirts were sold like hot-cakes

Here is an article I found in the Village Voice a while back after the attacks:

Retail is a seasonal business, so Ibrahim, a Senegalese immigrant who has taken to introducing himself as Abraham since September 11, is constantly adjusting his stock. Lately, his Chelsea establishment—a wobbly folding table set up on the sidewalk of Sixth Avenue—has been piled high with gloves, scarves, and knitted polyester hats. The stack of T-shirts changes, too, as Ibrahim tries to stay a step ahead of demand. Over the last couple of weeks, sensing how public sentiment has shifted, he has replaced his inventory of "United We Stand" shirts with "In Memory, FDNY." The 50-50 cotton-polyester blended tops go for $7.50—among the highest-priced items he sells. "These slowed down now, too," he says of the 9-11 commemorative apparel. "Customers not so interested anymore."

A great forum about FDNY T-Shirts

There are places to buy FDNY Merchandise and clothing and there are places not to. This forum tells you the do's and dont's. It's great.
One place I recommended below is awesome. FDNY T-shirts really should not cost more than $10.

When not to wear an FDNY T-Shirt: When you're the representative of a portable fire extinguisher servicing company

NYC.gov's FDNY FAQ section says that you should definitely not trust someone representing a portable fire extinguisher servicing company wearing an FDNY T-Shirt and that in fact they are prohibited from doing so.

Here is the answer:
A representative of a private company engaged in the servicing of fire safety equipment (such as a portable fire extinguisher servicing company) is prohibited from wearing FDNY clothing and logos.

That is one ugly FDNY T-Shirt there. Get a better looking one right here: FDNY T-Shirts.

2006: When FDNY T-Shirt wearers faced problems at bar

Here is a thread started on a discussion in 2006, on buckscountyfire.com:

Philadelphia Fire Dept hosted and FDNY appreciation Day at Citizens Bank Park during the Met Phillies game. There were a few hundred FDNY members there enjoying the great day. The Discrimation came against FDNY members as they tried to enter McFAddens pub which is located inside the stadium. The owner of the bar was not allowing any members to enter the bar wearing FDNY T shirts . He did not want FDNY members in his establishment causing embarrasement to all members who tried to enter.

2002: When wearing FDNY T-Shirts meant this would happen to you

For my first blog post, I wanted to start off with a look back at this NY Times response to letters from readers on October 6, 2002 (THE WAY WE LIVE NOW: 10-6-02: THE ETHICIST; I Love F.D.N.Y.). The first question is this:

I bought an F.D.N.Y. T-shirt online to benefit a firefighters' fund. When I wore it to lunch, I wasn't charged for drinks, supposedly because my order was slow. But then I overheard the waitress tell the manager, ''I didn't charge that nice firefighter for his beers.'' I bought this shirt to support firefighters, not to impersonate one. I don't want favors under false pretenses. This wasn't the only time people were almost too cordial when I wore this shirt. Should I be reluctant to wear it? Vince Leskosky, Cleveland. (read the rest here)

Today, wearing an FDNY probably does not have such an effect, but they still appear to be selling at quite a high rate.
